The 12 Stages of an Asbestos Project

Physical removal is only one stage. Plan construction from the expected clearance date — not from the last day of removal.

Inquiry & Scheduling

1-3 business days. We collect building age, renovation plans, suspected materials and urgency.

Inspection & Sampling

1-4 hours on site. Suspect materials inspected and bulk samples collected. See testing.

Laboratory Analysis

1-5 business days. Accredited lab analysis; rush and same-day options available.

Scope & Estimate

1-3 business days. Material measured, containment defined, written quote issued. See pricing.

Regulatory Notice

Often 10 working days. Certain regulated renovations and demolitions may require advance notification.

Customer Preparation

1-3 days. Personal property removed, occupants relocated when needed, access cleared.

Containment & Setup

0.5-2 days. HVAC isolated, barriers built, negative air and decontamination installed.

Material Removal

1-10+ days. Wet removal, controlled handling, packaging and progressive cleaning.

Final Cleaning

0.5-1 day. HEPA cleaning, removal of visible residue, pre-clearance inspection.

Clearance

Same day-24 hours. Air sampling and lab analysis when required or included in scope.

Teardown & Disposal

0.5-1 day. Containment removed after release; waste transported with full documentation.

Reconstruction

2 days-several weeks. Flooring, drywall, insulation replaced as a separate construction phase.

Typical Timelines by Project Type

Assuming normal access, one primary containment and no hidden surprises. Typical residential crew: 3-5 people.

Small Residential

Short pipe section, one bathroom floor, limited ceiling area.

5-14 calendar days total

Standard Residential

300-800 sq ft flooring, one level of ceiling texture, moderate attic.

2-3 weeks total

Large / Whole Home

Multiple materials, floors, rooms or containment zones.

3-8 weeks incl. rebuild

Commercial / Institutional

Survey, design, notice, phasing, monitoring, clearance.

4-10+ weeks

What Extends the Schedule

Our quotes state assumptions up front. These are the usual suspects:

Painted Popcorn Ceiling

Paint blocks water penetration; drywall may need to come down too. Adds 1-several days.

📚

Multiple Flooring Layers

New floors may hide tile, felt, paper and black mastic. Adds 20-60% time.

🏠

Occupied Building

Work limited to nights, weekends or small phases. Schedule may double.

🚧

Disconnected Rooms

Separate containments or repeated setup. Adds 0.5-1 day per zone.

Failed Clearance

Area must be recleaned and retested. Adds 0.5-2+ days.

💧

Water, Mold or Sewage

Becomes a combined hazardous-remediation project with separate plan and pricing.

How to Prepare

Good preparation keeps your project on schedule. You will get this checklist in writing at signing and again 48 hours before we mobilize.

2-4 Weeks Before

Complete testing. Get a written scope. Confirm air monitoring inclusion. Coordinate abatement dates with your contractor.

3-7 Days Before

Remove valuables and medications from work zone. Relocate pets. Empty cabinets and closets. Photograph existing finishes.

24-48 Hours Before

Clear driveway and access. Provide keys and gate codes. Confirm HVAC isolation plan. Do not schedule trades before formal clearance.

What Not to Do

Do not sand, scrape, sweep or bag suspect material. During the project, do not enter containment or unplug negative-air machines.

After Clearance: Documents You Receive

You return only after formal release. Then you get the paperwork that protects you for years.

Completion Package

Completion statement, visual-inspection documentation, air-clearance results, materials and quantities removed, project photographs.

Waste Documentation

Waste shipment records and landfill documentation. Map of any asbestos-containing material that remains.

Reconstruction

Separate phase. Build at least one contingency day between expected clearance and arrival of finish trades.

Best Time of Year in Boise

Interior work runs year-round. Some windows are easier than others.

Spring (April-May)

Strongest overall window. Moderate temps reduce HVAC disruption and heat stress. Great for interiors, attics, siding.

Early Summer (June)

Long daylight and dry access. Best for exterior siding and roofing-related work.

Fall (Sept-Oct)

Second strong window for interior work and exterior completion before winter.

Winter (Nov-March)

Fine for indoor work with separate heat. Poor for siding, roofing and occupied homes needing HVAC.

When to Book

Small Residential

At least 2 weeks before the area must be ready.

Standard Renovation

Begin testing and scheduling 3-4 weeks before demolition.

Commercial / Multifamily

Begin inspection and planning 6-8 weeks ahead.

School / Public Building

Start 2-4 months before the planned closure.

The earlier testing happens, the more schedule control you keep. See what each stage costs or check our service areas.

Timeline Questions

How long does asbestos removal take?

Most residential projects take 1-7 working days once work begins. The complete process typically takes 1-3 weeks. Larger projects should be planned several weeks in advance.

Why does setup take so long for a small job?

Before any material comes out, the crew isolates HVAC, seals penetrations, builds containment and establishes negative air. Setup can take as long as the removal itself.

Can I stay in the house during the work?

Depends on containment size, HVAC shutdowns and access to kitchen and bathroom. Small isolated projects often allow occupants to remain; whole-home work usually means short-term relocation.

Why can't finish trades come the day after removal?

The area is not released until final cleaning, visual inspection, air clearance and teardown are complete. Schedule trades from the expected clearance date with at least one contingency day.
